Domain Name If required. Enter the domain name provided by your ISP. Encapsulation is a method for enclosing multiple protocols. The login name provided by your ISP. This is often an email address.
The password that you use to log in to your ISP. Idle Timeout In minutes. If you want to change the login timeout, enter a new value in minutes.
This determines how long the wireless modem router keeps the Internet connection active after there is no Internet activity from the LAN. Entering a value of 0 zero means never log out. Get Dynamically from ISP. Your ISP automatically assigns these addresses. Use Static IP Address. The DNS server is used to look up site addresses based on their names.
Get Automatically from ISP. Your ISP automatically assigns this address. If a secondary DNS server address is available, enter it also. NAT automatically assigns private IP addresses This disables NAT, but leaves the firewall active. Disable NAT only if you are sure you do not need it. When NAT is disabled, only standard routing is performed by this router.
Classical routing lets you directly manage the IP addresses that the wireless modem router uses. Classical routing should be selected only by experienced users. Disabling NAT reboots the wireless modem router and resets its configuration settings to the factory defaults. Disable NAT only if you plan to set up the wireless modem router in a setting where you will be manually administering the IP address space on the LAN side of the router.
Disable firewall. This disables the firewall in addition to disabling NAT. With the firewall disabled, the protections usually provided to your network are disabled. Router MAC Address.
They will then accept traffic only from the MAC address of that computer. The wireless modem router will capture and use the MAC address of the computer that you are now using. You must be using the one computer that is allowed by the ISP. Enter the MAC address that you want to use. Note: It is required that you use the Setup Wizard to select the correct country for the default DSL settings to work. For the VPI, type a number between 0 and The default is 8 for the U.
For the VCI, type a number between 32 and The default is 35 for the U. Click Apply. Review your settings to be sure you have selected the correct options and typed everything correctly. Contact your ISP to verify that you have the correct configuration information. Read Chapter 7, Troubleshooting. For security reasons, the wireless modem router has its own user name and password that default to admin and password. You can and should change these to a secure user name and password that are easy to remember.
The ideal password contains no dictionary words from any language and is a mixture of upper case and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols. It can be up to 30 characters. Note: The router user name and password are not the same as the user name and password for logging in to your Internet connection.
See Types of Logins on page 31 for more information about login types. Enter the new password twice. Change the login time-out to a value between 1 and 99 minutes if the default value of 5 minutes does not meet your needs. Click Apply to save your changes. After changing the password, you are required to log in again to continue the configuration.
If you have backed up the wireless modem router settings previously, you should do a new backup so that the saved settings file includes the new password. See Back Up on page 62 for information about backing up your network configuration.
The router interface provides a Logout command at the bottom of the router menus. Log out when you expect to be away from your computer for a relatively long period of time.
There are three separate types of logins that have different purposes. It is important that you understand the difference so that you know which login to use when.
Your service provider has provided you with this login information in a letter or some other way. If you cannot find this login information, contact your service provider. This login is preconfigured and can be found on the label on the bottom of your unit. See Chapter 3, Wireless Settings , for more information.
This chapter describes how to use the Wireless Settings screens to view and change if needed your wireless network settings.
Security features to prevent objectionable content from reaching your PCs are covered in Chapter 4, Security Settings. The N Modem Router comes with preset security. This means that the Wi-Fi network name SSID , passphrase, and security option encryption protocol are preset in the factory. You can find the preset SSID and passphrase on the bottom of the unit.
Devices that know the SSID and the passphrase can find your wireless network and connect. Note: The preset SSID and passphrase are uniquely generated for every device to protect and maximize your wireless security.
The security protocol in force encrypts data transmissions and ensures that only trusted devices receive authorization to connect to your network. The Wireless Settings screen lets you view and change the preset security settings. If you do decide to change your preset security settings, make a note of the new settings and store it in a safe place where you can easily find it. Unlike wired network data, wireless data transmissions extend beyond your walls and can be received by any device with a compatible wireless adapter radio.
For this reason, it is very important to maintain the preset security and understand the other security features available to you. Besides the preset security settings described above, your wireless modem router has the security features described here and in Chapter 4, Security Settings. Welcome to ManualMachine. The router still appears to be connected but nothing happens.
If you reboot the computer, the router still appears to be visible but it just won't connect. The only way to restore the connection is to physically turn it off and on. Any ideas? Message 1 of Me too. Message 2 of Have re-tried setting channels to 1, 6 and 11 and the problem still exists on every channel.
Message 3 of Same problem here. Seems a number of posts on this forum with the same issue and no solutions. I have called Netgear 4x now. I have changed channels, settings for the SSID, security options, etc. Took a couple of days to develop the issue I might add and then the frequency of the disconections is increasing.
Only thing I have noted is that the DGN seems to run very hot and there is no airflow in the case to cool. My old WGN works fine and never had any issues. Message 4 of Yes, I don't think this is an issue with security or interference.
Sometimes mine is ok but then other times it can drop the connection reguarly done it about 3 times one after the other yesterday but has been ok today so far. Netgear have been no use.
Am seriously just considering binning it and buying a different router. Message 5 of I had the same problem with Firmware V1. Now I've installed V1. Message 6 of Yet another one here reporting this problem A DGN which has worked perfectly as a wired router for many months is now driving me mad when I try to set up a wireless connection I have been trying to get it working on and off for over a week. It connects and works fine until the laptop goes to sleep or reboots and then it totally refuses to connect to the router I installed firmware V1.
The aerial is connected fine. There is no interference in the area Nothing is overheating. No wireless connection when the laptop is rebooted There are occasionally a couple of other routers I can see in the local area..
I have ruled out the laptop as being the root of the problem because I get the same from my phone when I try to connect Everyone I spoke to who knows about these things says they have never seen anything like this before Message 7 of I have the very same problem and it's becoming much, much worse! It can't be a laptop problem. I'm using a Dell, my son uses Toshiba, both wireless, while our desktop computer is connected by ethernet cable.
Now if it was a laptop problem, I couldn't see them losing connection simultaneously and both being unable to reconnect. The router has to be restarted and once it does the laptops reconnect without any difficulties. I've had this router for 4 months and it is steadily becoming worse. It seems to me, judging by this problem being brought up constantly in various forums, that it must be a problem with the router.
Where is their customer service? Message 8 of Hi All, I've been wrestling with this wifi issue on the DGN for a month now and although I have no solution this is what I've noticed: I've swapped the device over at the store I bought it from and the problem still occurs.
I've upgraded the firmware to Version 1. I've thoroughly ruled out interference and changed the channel number multiple times. I've tried all the different forms of encryption. I've lowered and raised my MTU. When it's working it's working flawlessly and fast, and there is never any warning or pattern as to when it will lock down. I've called Netgear and they only really offer a "have you tried turning it off and on again" support solution. Anything beyond that and you have to pay for "advanced support" how's that for cheek.
Does anyone have this router and not have this problem? It would be good to know the exact settings they're running to get it to stay functioning. I've all but run out of combinations and it's getting a bit tiresome having to reset the router multiple times a day. Message 9 of Well it is not just wireless. I use it just as a modem and wired router as I have a separate Wireless Access Point. The "disconnections" mean that the router suddenly fails to connect any computer to any other computer roughly once a day and occasionally more often.
I lose the internet, access to any other PC in the network, access to my NAS and access to my network printer. This points to either the Router or Switch components failing. I suspect it is a firmware fault or memory leak as if it were heat it would fail again quickly after it is rebooted. However it seems to go another day or two before it needs rebooting again. The only cure is to power off and then on again. Frankly I don't know why I bothered to change it. I assumed the DGN would be a better router but, to be honest, it is worse.
Note, need to amazon it's not sure. This article addresses common problems with wireless networks sorted by the type of symptoms you are experiencing. I have tried to follow the setup wizard and i can get connected as long as i leave the cable hooked into my laptop but as soon as i take it out i loose the connection and my router i'm setting up is supposed to be wireless.
